Just around the corner, camping and gardening.
Spring is here!
Well, sort of.
While spring did officially arrive on March 20th, that sunny warm weather hasn’t quite made it. At least not where we are.
glyph bar is located in southern Alberta, Canada. Just north of Calgary. When the weather starts to warm up and the snow begins to melt, we start to dream of a couple of things, gardening, and camping.
Many of us start our gardens indoors as our growing season is a lot shorter than most places in North America. We generally don’t start planting outside until the end of May or the beginning of June. So, the die-hards will dig out their trays, peat moss and seeds and start to grow some seedlings to get a head start on that short hot summer of ours.
As for camping, well that’s a different story. You see, us outdoorsy types, we can’t wait.
As soon as that snow starts to melt, we start dragging our tents and trailers out of storage and begin planning our weekend getaways. The first big one being Victoria Day, the long weekend at the end of May.
After many months of cold winter weather, we can’t wait to get out there to sit around a campfire, roast some hot-dogs, drink some beverages, soak up the sun and enjoy some fine company. The May long weekend is the first real chance of the season.
The problem is… it seems every year, the May long weekend is the same weekend we have our last big snowfall. And when I say a big snowfall, I mean a BIG snowfall!
It is not uncommon to have more than 10 cm (4”) of wet, heavy snow on the Victoria Day weekend, wreaking havoc on tents and awnings alike, as well as breaking branches on scores of trees.
Regardless, we all keep our fingers crossed and hope this year will be one without the dreaded May long weekend dump of snow. But if it does, we will still revel in the start of camping season.
